Branding is important in Bollywood:Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai are perfect examples of being famous for their flops. Kareena Kapoor has had it easy, literally. It hasn’t exactly been a rough ride for the Kapoor babe from Day One itself. Even though she left the blockbuster role of female lead in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai against macho Hrithik Roshan to Ameesha Patel, she managed to garner much more publicity for her flop debut, Refugee, than what Ameesha did for her superhit starter. And that was the beginning of a new mantra to market a diva — hit or no hit, the Brand has to hit the headlines.

And it was this very marketing mantra which saw the rise, rise and only rise for Kareena Kapoor. Even after a spate of flops like Asoka, Yaadein, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Jeena Sirf Tere Liya, etc the youngest Kapoor kid saw all the big names from Karan Johar to Yash Chopra to Mani Ratnam and Boney Kapoor vying for her attention. Film after film flopped, but nothing changed much for Bebo. She continued to demand very high rates, which paradoxically kept rising with each flop.

And following in her footsteps closely was none other than our very own grey-green eyed goddess, Aishwarya Rai who, in spite of not having given a single hit in the start of her career for very long hit the jackpot with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and is the most ‘sought-after’ Bollywood actress today.

So, this is the Bebo-Ash blockbuster story. What is it that makes the two divas eligible for the big league which otherwise has names like Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra who, by now, must have lost count of their hit films? “Both Ash and Bebo have class. I know them closely. They have talent as well as beauty, and I guess this combination is more than enough to please the audience. At the same time, one must not forget that Ash is a big international star,” asserts Showman Subhash Ghai who has earlier directed Ash in Taal and has done as many as three films with Kareena.

Film critic Indu Mirani punches in a more logical explanation to this unique phenomenon. “I think Aishwarya and Kareena are totally different girls as far as personality and presentation go. But their careers are similar in the sense that they have got all the good stuff in spite of not having hit films. I think it’s because there are very few actually hot leading ladies in the industry today. Rani, Preity and Priyanka cannot take up all the roles, right? There are very few A-grade heroines. And these two girls know how to present themselves. They are also very media-savvy and hence it has been easy for them,” she says.

But why isn’t it easy for other talented good-looking girls too as, say, Lara Dutta? Why hasn’t she matched up to this grade? “Kareena, of course, is a pedigreed girl. She has been lucky as she belongs to the Kapoor Khaandaan. She also had her sister Karisma, a superstar in her own right. For Ash, I think it’s more of media hype with her scintillating beauty helping in a big way.” explains Mirani.

And if we throw back a look, this trend doesn’t seem to be very new. There are examples in the past also where artistes, even though they hadn’t given a single hit, had dozens of movies in their kitty. For example, in the 80s, the pinup girl of that time, Sonam, had close to 40 films in her kitty even before her first film was out for review! Similar was the case with Chunky Panday who, apart from Aankhen with Govinda, has no film to be remember him by. But he was one of the hottest dial-a-quote stars of late 80s.

Production designer Bindiya Dutta, wife of filmmaker JP Dutta, and herself hyped as a Hema Malini clone in her heyday, has had the experience of working with Ash and Bebo; and sums it up. “For us, hits and flops are inconsequential. We are only here to do good work and definitely we choose our leading ladies according to what they suit best. Like Refugee wouldn’t have been the same without Kareena and Umrao Jaan without Ash was unimaginable.”

What a hit explanation. Branding, anyone.

Shahid Kapoor Wants To Grow Up

Apparently Shahid Kapoor wants to grow up, on screen at least. Kapoor has decided that he wants to stay away from his old roles, as the boy next door and focus more on a "manlier" role. He wants to change his image so badly that for his latest film, "Yahoo!" he was a bit of a drama queen.

"Yahoo,!" was directed by Ken Gosh who had to constantly deal with Kapoor's nagging. Shahid even had Ken Ghosh recast the role of his love interest. Sources say that Jiah Khan was originally cast for the part but Shahid Kapoor didn't like the way she complimented his role. Ghosh then had to find another girl for Shahid and chose Genelia D' Souza, feeling that she brought a more mature character to the film. The tricky thing was that Jiah had already shot a song for the film, her part ended up being edited out.

That isn't the only thing that changed. The original storyline had Shahid Kapoor as an nice up and coming singer with kids as his supporters, but once again, Shahid felt that it wouldn't work out. Now he is going to be a struggling dancer instead.

But we can feel for Shahid Kapoor, Bollywood is getting ever more competitive. He has to deal with Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, and Ranbir Kapoor among others for roles. We hope he's happy with his latest project in "Yahoo!" and look forward to seeing his new "grown-up" look. But let us know what you think about Shahid Kapoor. Would you rather, he stick with his boyish image as long as he can or go for a manlier role?

Hard Kaur's Comic Act Goes to the Leaderboard On Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Last week ,Hard Kaur was on top of the leaderboard with her two performances earning the judges respect for her in the competition.

Since this week's theme is the circus, you'd have to guess what Hard Kaur and her partner Savio had to dress up as. Well if you haven't figured it out, they had to become clowns! Their act consisted of funny routines, streamers, and the art of using the hola hoop. Just like their past performances, their dance also had lifts.

Vaibhavi Merchant said that it was an outstanding performance. She did a joke on them where she brought them flowers and she squeezed it to get water out. Anyway, she was pleased with the performance.

Saroj Khan was also impressed by the performance. Hard Kaur and Savio gave her a roll of paper that had money imprinted in them to impress her. She was definitely impressed and gave her money as always to show her gratitude.

Juhi Chawla said she expected a lot from her. This week's performance impressed her with the aerobic dance style as well as the comedic portions.

The judges were so impressed that you can take a wild guess and find out they deserved a 30 which is what they got. Hard Kaur owns the leader board again this week and is safe yet again.

Backstage, the contestants gave their comments on Hard Kaur. The contestants, especially TV star Gauhar Khan said that Hard Kaur has become a tough opponent and they think the reason she is getting high marks is because of her signature lifts. I'm sensing a little jealousy here! Hard Kaur commented by saying that they should follow her example and try doing these difficult lifts. Well that's giving it to them Hard Kaur!

This week's elimination goes to TV Soap star Parul Chauhan whose clown act didn't earn enough votes from the juntas

Anushka Sharma's Dance Moves

Ever since her starring role with Shahrukh Khan in Aditya Chopra's recent hit 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi', audiences alike have praised Anushka Sharma's acting and especially her dance skills.

A few months after the release of her movie, Anushka made appearances in many dance shows including Sony's 'Jhalak Dihkkla Jaa'. She appeared on the show last month and showed her support for the other contestants as well as showing off a few dance tricks of her own.

"It feels very good. And this is a great platform to launch the Rab Ne DVD. It is a very popular show and a big platform for us."

She rates herself as an ordinary dancer. "I think I am all right. It depends on the people who work with you like Shaimak Davar and Vaibhavi Merchant. I don't have any professional training in dance. I just followed their instructions."

After being part of a dance flick, Anushka commented that she is more confident in dancing now. "I am more used to it and comfortable now. I want to do better every time."

Now she has a three-year contract to work with Yash Raj films. Her upcoming film will feature Shahid Kapoor and is directed by Parmeet Sethi who acted in Aditya's first film 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'.

Life after 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' went pretty well with Anushka Sharma since fans have truly recognized her and can't wait to see what she brings in the near future. "Now, people recognize me when I go out. My friends ask me the same question but I don't think life has changed much apart from giving interviews to the media."

A.R. Rahman Goes on World Tour

A.R. Rahman is easily one of the busiest people in Bollywood. In fact, he's probably already working hard on the next great Bollywood flick. That's why we wonder where he found the time to start a world tour!

It's been a long road for A.R. Rahman to get his career to where it is today. The composer and artist has won countless awards including the Golden Globe, Critic's Choice, Filmfare Award and of course the coveted Academy Award for Best Original Song and Best Original Music Score.

All of these accomplishments have won him some pretty devoted fans. That's why it's no surprise that his "Jai Ho" World Tour was kicked off with a bang. In a small town in Kerala, hundreds clamored to a stadium for one of the first performances of his music tour. This is the first of thirty-nine shows he'll be performing over the course of five years.

We can't help but wonder what's next for the rising star that is known in Bollywood for the countless movies he has worked on. Taking a look back, this list includes 'Lagaan', 'Ghajini', and of course 'Slumdog Millionaire'-for which he won the Oscar. His career spans much further back than that in Bollywood and his contributions in music and film are almost unmatched in their success.

Sonam Kapoor all set to play Desi Emma

After having so many failures in film, it would be a shock to see Sonam Kapoor being offered a role in a new film. That's why she's diverted her focus from her career to concentrate on her dad Anil Kapoor's new production.

Desi Hits! told you that Anil Kapoor was creating a film based on his daughter's favorite novel "Emma" by Jane Austen.

Well the film has finally begun production. The Bollywood version is called 'Ayesha' and will be based on the classic period story. And it looks like Sonam Kapoor is taking this role very seriously! She seems to be completely taken in by her character and can't think beyond it. Sources tell us that Sonam Kapoor has been living her character wherever she is-home, partying with friends or socializing.

Bappi Lahiri & Janet Jackson going for a concert

It seems like Bappi Lahiri is going to be taking himself further west in hopes of putting together a show that could be an interesting one. The successful artist and director has in the past worked with artists like the Jackson Five and even created some international remixes. Well now it looks like he's once again teaming up with the Jacksons for another collaboration.

According to DNA India, he is rumored to have "lined up a series of international projects with the frontrunners of the US pop scene-The Jackson Five band, rapper Jadda and R&B singer M'ya". Will this be a concert tour that will span the world? Or will it just be a series of shows in select places? All that's supposedly certain is that Michael Jackson will not be joining his family for the tour.

Apparently the tour to India has already been planned. Currently Bappi Lahiri is busy trying to convince Janet Jackson to join into the festivities and is going as far as to fly to Los Angeles, California to get her involved with his new plan. If Bappi Lahiri is creating a tour featuring the Jackson Five, then he's got his work cut out for him trying to get the two most important Jacksons to join in.

What do our readers think about Bappi Lahiri trying to put together a concert with the Jackson Five, rapper Jadda, and M'ya? Do you think that this is a good collaboration and do you think that he will be successful? What do you think that Bappi Lahiri brings to the table as far as being successful in his venture? We want to hear our reader's thoughts on the possibility of Bappi Lahiri coming together with some Western artists to create a concert that appeals to the masses.

Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai to Star in 'Guzaarish'

There's no denying Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have hot chemistry on screen and their pairing proves to bring big box office bucks. Anyone remember 'Dhoom 2' and 'Jodhaa Akbar'? Yeah, we thought so! Well after those two films the next director to snap up the two light-eyed actors is Sanjay Leela Bhansali who reportedly just finalized the title of the film, 'Guzaarish.'

The film is still in it's early stages and will begin filming next year. The film is said to be a remake of Hollywood film, 'The Prestige' which was released in 2006 and was directed by 'The Dark Knight' director Christopher Nolan. Rumor is Sanjay has adapted the script, which is about two rival magicians, to fit into an Indian context. Sanjay is also working with UTV Motion Pictures this time around, which also produced, 'Jodhaa Akbar.' But here's a juicy little tid bit. Rumor is Sanjay's beloved friend, Salman Khan is a bit p.o.ed at the director as it was

Salman who suggested the story idea to Sanjay and now he's making the film with Hrithik instead of Salman, who let's be honest, needs any type of career boost he can get! Then again if Sanjay cast Salman in the film obviously he wouldn't be able to have Aishwarya in the female lead.

Priyanka and Ranbir Kapoor together

Looks like Priyanka Chopra's recent hospital stay isn't slowing her down one bit as she's just signed on to her latest project opposite Ranbir Kapoor! The two will be seen in Siddharth Anand's next film that will be produced by Sajid Nadiadwala not Yash Raj Films as his last two films have been. It's also the first time Ranbir and Priyanka will be seen together on film, a reason that Siddharth and Sajid signed both actors as it's a fresh pairing.

Here's the real kicker though, apparently Priyanka had first refused the film when she was told she would have to gain weight for her role. The movie's story was about an overweight girl and good-looking young guy. However, Siddharth threw out that script and is now working on a new one for the actors, with the genre of the film remaining the same.

Now you might think, how shallow can Priyanka be? Well turns out she's not alone as many actresses were reportedly approached to do the role, but turned it down as no one wanted to gain weight for the role. It was even rumored that Katrina Kaif was going to do the role, but Siddharth says that was just a rumor. If you recall, Katrina worked with the director in 'Bachna Ae Haseeno,' her part was cut as the movie was getting to be too lengthy.

So looks like Bollywood actresses aren't happy about gaining weight for a role for whatever reason may be, whether it's for vanity reasons or for lack of the script. However, it can be said that many Hollywood counterparts have won Oscar gold for gaining weight for their roles, such as Charlize Theron in 'Monster.'
Whatever the reason may be, it looks like for now, Priyanka or any other Bollywood actress, won't be gaining weight for a role. Reportedly the film will be show in the US, however Siddharth isn't giving out any details other then that Priyanka and Ranbir have signed on and that the movie is a "romantic comedy with a twist."

So what do you guys think about Priyanka choosing not to gain weight for the film? And what do you think about the pairing of Ranbir and Priyanka? Drop us a comment with your thoughts!

Priyanka Kothari - Feeling hot hot hot

Priyanka Kothari, who has barely recovered from the injury that she had suffered during the outdoor shooting schedule of ‘Agyaat’, was recently left gasping for breath, courtesy some innovative format of ‘Yoga’ that she indulged in. On suggestion of a friend, she opted for ‘Hot Yoga’ classes, a new concept in India. However, after attending just one class, she swore off it and promised herself that she would never be going back anywhere close to the venue.

“Can you believe it, they put you into a room, lock the doors and set the temperature to 50 degrees? And then it is expected that you would get into some full on intense ‘Yoga’. Come on, there are far better ways of maintaining your body and in my list, this unique form of ‘Yoga’ would come last”, says an exasperated Priyanka as she remembers the torturous grill that she had to go through.

“One fine day I got a call from someone from my gym who suggested that I attend these ‘Hot Yoga’ classes. Since I was recovering from injury and was willing to experiment with things that could help me get back to shape sooner, I was game for it. Those one and a half hours that I spent in the closed room would easily count as some of my most tiring moments ever. I tried following all the instructions but once I came out of the class, I was already half dead”, Priyanka narrates her plight.

No wonder, she decided there and then that she was back to her good old gym rather than an experimental trip like this.

“Bombay mein already itni garmi toh phir uske upar aise garmi waale mahaul mein exercise karne ki kya zaroorat hai (When Bombay is already so hot, I don’t see any reason why one should get into a cauldron like this and work out)”, smiles Priyanka who would soon be back on sets to shoot for ‘Agyaat’.

She has another reason for not really being charmed by ‘Hot Yoga’.

“Tell me, isn’t one of the major most criteria for benefiting from ‘Yoga’ is to breath well”, she questions, “This is why worldwide it is practised in open air. No wonder I found the entire concept of doing it in a closed room quite funny. It was claustrophobic.”

She doesn’t mince any words when it comes to the trainers of ‘Hot Yoga’.

“These were some firangs who were in charge of this entire activity. Come on, the entire world is following ‘Yoga’ which is practiced by us Indians and here we had some outsiders trying to tell us what to do”, she says in a humorous tone, “I would rather rely on my own folks who have been doing this so very successfully for thousands of years rather than some newbie who is just so willing to change the very format of this beautiful way of keeping your body healthy.”

Sushmita Sen insecure about Do Knot Disturb?

If our inside sources of the film Do Knot Disturb are to be believed, then Sushmita Sen seems to be extremely insecure considering her role in the upcoming David Dhawan comedy Do Knot Disturb. It is a multi star cast film starring Govinda, Lara Dutta, Ritesh Deshmukh and Sohail Khan.

Our sources reveal, “The film for the first time brings together two former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta. But Sush is not really insecure about her role being shortened as compared to a much younger and hotter Lara. Her worry is that being a more male centric comedy what with three of Bollywood’s finest comic talents Govinda, Ritesh and Sohail coming together for the first time, she will end up getting the shortest screen time compared to the entire main lead cast. She is trying all the tricks in her book to get a dekko of the film’s rushes to satisfy her doubt. Apparently, David Dhawan is trying his best to convince her that there is nothing she should be worried of but she is still insisting.”

When Feroz Khan couldn’t take NO for an answer

At the prayer meeting in memory of late actor-filmmaker Feroz Khan at Mumbai star hotel Sanjay Dutt narrated an interesting anecdote about stylish filmmaker which brought smiles on the faces of everyone inspite of the solemnity of the occasion.

Our source present at the prayer meeting recalls, “Dutt sharing his experience of shooting with Feroz Khan went on to narrate the incident that occurred while he shooting in the deserts around Dubai in scorching heat during the making of Yalgaar. A few unit members came running to him and pleaded him to stop the filmmaker who was enraged and chasing the film’s cameraman S.M. Anwar. Dutt immediately ran behind Feroz Khan and managed to stop him in his tracks even as the cameraman was running with the camera, for his dear life. When Sanjay asked Feroz Khan why he was so angry with the cameraman, Khan replied that he had asked him to set up a shot in a particular way but he (the cameraman) had replied back that he couldn’t do it. At this, Sanjay explained to Feroz Khan that it was, in fact, impossible to set up the camera the way he (Feroz Khan) wanted as it was a desert they were shooting in. But without batting an eyelid, Feroz had shot back at Dutt, ‘I know, it’s not possible, but how dare he (the cameraman) say ‘no’ to me!’ That was Feroz Khan who couldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. S.M. Anwar was not a novice in the field as he had been the cameraman of stylishly shot films such as Shaan, Shakti and Saagar.”

Hrithik-Aish starring Bhansali film titled Guzarish

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming next starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has finally got its title. It has been titled, Guzaarish. The film is scheduled to go on floors by end of 2009. Reportedly, this film is a remake of Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed hit, The Prestige. It was also speculated whether who would be producing the films along with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Bhansali’s last film was a co-production with Hollywood giant Sony Picture Company. Our industry sources claim, the Hrithik – Aish starrer is a 50-50 joint venture between Bhansali and UTV. Now incidentally, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s last film together, Jodhaa Akbar was also a UTV production.

Reportedly, Salman Khan is miffed with Bhansali and has vowed never to work with him again. Reason being, it was his idea to the bearded maker to remake the Hollywood dark thriller, but Bhansali kept him in the dark and began the project with Hrithik instead.

Big b on a high

Amitabh Bachchan’s been promoting the IFFA quite hard this year again.

He has to, after all he’s the brand ambassador of the ten year old festival.

The IFFA travels to a new country every year and this time it’s Macau.

Now this one is a port town in South West China and not very far from Hong Kong. It’s also a very special administrative region of China.

The guy knows how to mix business with pleasure well and Bachchan relived the experience this Friday in Macau.

In the year 1979, Mr. Bachchan sat in a gondola to shoot a song for a Hindi film called ‘The Great Gambler’. And thirty years later too, he relived the experience in a similar trip in Macau.

He’s said: “After Venice, I have experienced a gondola after 30 years at the Venetian Macau. It was an enchanting experience. I sat on the gondola 30 years back to shoot the song ‘Do lafzon ki hai’ for my film ‘The Great Gambler’ (1979). The song for the film not only made the Venetian gondola popular, but Venice as well.”

He’s says the IFFA will make Macau famous, “After 30 years, today IIFA is going to do the same thing to the Venetian Macau what it (the song) did to Venice then. It was a very interesting and exciting ride.”

Akshay/Katrina’s perfect symbiosis?

The non actress that she’s is, it wasn’t easy for Katrina Kaif to survive in B-Town despite the help she was getting from her angry man - Salman Khan.

Until a certain Mr. Akshay Kumar happened to her.

He too was looking for a perfect screen partner after his wifey Twinkle Khanna banned him from working with Priyanka Chopra after too much talk of their link ups.

And Kat knew nothing about acting, other than sitting and looking pretty and running around trees.

They had undeserving and unwarranted hits like ‘Namastey London’, ‘Welcome’ and ‘Singh Is King’ together.

But both wanted to experiment and started doing films with other actors but things didn’t turn out to be as rosy as they thought they would be.

By the way, Akshay loves to do the same things over and over again and put in a mishmash of comedy, action, romance etc in all his movies. And Kat doesn’t have the prowess to do anything new either.

So ‘Chandni Chowk To China’ fell flat on its face and the chemistry with Deepika didn’t work at all.

Katrina’s movie with beau Salman Khan -‘Yuuvraaj’ did badly too.

So looks like now the twosome have realized their real worth now.

When director Priyandarshan was making a choice of heroine for his next venture, ‘De Dhana Dhan’ opposite Akki, Kat’s name came up.

Akki quickly recommended Katrina’s name as he again wanted to repeat the on-screen chemistry.

Priyan is happy too and they are currently shooting in Singapore.

All looks well as of now. Unless something drastic happens and the chemistry and everything else goes down the drain! Watch this space for more.
