Classical vocalist Gangubai Hangal dead The Padma Bhushan awardee is survived by two sons and a daughter




Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Gangubai Hangal passed away at a hospital in Hubli on Tuesday after a brief illness. Hangal, 97, is survived by two sons and a daughter.

According to doctors, she was put on life support on Monday night and breathed her last on Tuesday morning.

Born in 1913, Hangal was a classical singer of the Kirana Gharana. She studied under Sawai Gandharva. Her autobiography is titled Nanna Badukina Haadu (The Song of My Life).

Hangal began her concert career with a performance at the Bombay Music Circle in 1933. She was bestowed with several honours, including the Padma Bhushan, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Tansen Samman.
