John Abraham Endorses Fairness Cream

If it wasn't bad enough that Sonam Kapoor stepped in line to take over the fairness cream ad for L'Oreal that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan refused to do, now John Abraham is getting behind the stuff. Actors like Shahrukh Khan have already supported fairness creams in India, so it was easy for John Abraham to also follow in his footsteps. Reports say that he has agreed to endorse a fairness cream.

I've talked about fairness cream before. As I mentioned in a previous article about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, this isn't just a problem in places like India and Pakistan, but all over the world. Wherever there is a country that has dark skinned people, there you will find advertising for fairness products. It seems that fair or light skin is always deemed more beautiful and more acceptable than dark skin. But it seems a little sad that while Caucasian people spend their days in tanning beds, Desi people are trying to apply dangerous chemicals on their face to get lighter.

Personally, I like my skin color the way it is and I don't want to make it "fairer". Obviously there are many who feel this way such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (although she's pretty fair skinned) and even John Abraham's girlfriend Bipasha Basu. She said recently that "You'll never find me endorsing alcohol or fairness creams. Especially fairness cream, because I don't like the whole penchant for fair skin. I was offered a product endorsement for a fairness cream ages ago, but I declined. In India, dark skinned girls are still subjected to taunts and pity. In the matrimonial columns, people still advertise for a fair bride. I'm dark skinned and very proud of that."

So what's the obsession with fairness creams? In countries where people are born...um, brown, what's the obsession with being so light skinned? These companies seek out light skinned actors to promote such products, so the question also needs to be asked do they really work? Personally I think people need to accept the way they look and not try to change who they are because that's what others want them to be like.

What do our readers think? Do you think that actors like John Abraham and Shahrukh Khan should be supporting such a product? Many young people look up to and see these stars and may use these fairness creams although they should be happy with themselves just the way they are. So do you think that it's okay that fairness creams are on the market? Let us know your thoughts on John Abraham following in the fairness cream revolution and whether or not you like them or think they should be banned.
